#2 NOTRE DAME vs. #8 BYU: THE IRISH HEAD TO PROVO, UT FOR A TOP-10 SHOWDOWN IN PRIMETIME

10/16/2026

The stakes are getting bigger, the lights are getting brighter, and the margin for error is getting smaller. The No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish head west to take on the No. 8 BYU Cougars in one of the biggest games of the college football season so far. Notre Dame enters at 6-0, while BYU brings an unbeaten 5-0 record into the primetime showdown at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC, and ESPN's College GameDay will be broadcasting from BYU's campus earlier in the day. This is the first time a top-10 matchup has been played at LaVell Edwards Stadium, setting the stage for an electric atmosphere in Provo.

Notre Dame: Rolling into ProvoThe Irish are coming off a statement-making 58-7 demolition of Stanford, a performance that showcased just how dangerous this team can be when all three phases are clicking.
Quarterback C.J. Carr completed 14 of 20 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns against Stanford, while freshman running back Jonaz Walton exploded for 181 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular 97-yard scoring run. Notre Dame piled up 598 total yards and held Stanford to just 202.
That balance is becoming a major strength for the Irish. Carr has demonstrated the ability to distribute the ball and capitalize on scoring opportunities, while the ground game has multiple weapons capable of changing a game in a hurry.
But Saturday presents a different kind of challenge. BYU's defense is physical, disciplined, and particularly strong against the run. Notre Dame will need to win the battle up front, protect Carr, and avoid the costly mistakes that can swing a hostile road game.
BYU: The Biggest Test Yet?The Cougars are 5-0 for a reason. Head coach Kalani Sitake has BYU playing confident, physical football, and Saturday represents a massive opportunity for the program to make a national statement. A win over the No. 2 Irish would strengthen BYU's College Football Playoff résumé and give the Cougars one of the biggest victories in program history.

Quarterback Bear Bachmeier is a major part of BYU's offensive identity. He's a dual-threat quarterback who can make plays with his arm and legs, putting pressure on a defense to stay disciplined. Against Iowa State, Bachmeier threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns while adding 109 rushing yards.

The challenge for BYU? Finding enough production on the ground without star running back LJ Martin, who is expected to miss the game with a lower-body injury. That puts even more pressure on Bachmeier and the Cougars' supporting cast to keep the Irish defense guessing.

The Matchups That Could Decide the Game1. C.J. Carr vs. the BYU defense
Carr has been efficient and productive, but BYU's defensive front presents a significant test. Can Notre Dame protect its quarterback, create explosive plays, and avoid turnovers?

2. Notre Dame's defense vs. Bear Bachmeier
The Irish must contain Bachmeier's mobility, pressure him without losing contain, and force BYU into difficult third-down situations. Discipline will be every bit as important as raw talent.

3. Can the Irish establish the run?
Walton and Notre Dame's other backs are coming off a monster performance against Stanford. BYU's run defense is considerably tougher, so winning the line of scrimmage could determine how the Irish offense operates.

4. The Provo atmosphere
With College GameDay on campus and a primetime national audience watching, BYU will have an electric home-field environment. Notre Dame needs to start fast, handle the noise, and avoid giving the crowd a reason to take over.

The Stakes: More Than Just 7-0Notre Dame has already put together six convincing wins, including a 58-7 statement against Stanford. But winning on the road against a top-10 opponent is a different challenge.
The Irish are chasing more than another number in the win column. They're looking to strengthen their playoff résumé, prove they can handle an elite opponent away from home, and show that their balanced offense and aggressive defense can hold up against a team with legitimate postseason ambitions.

For BYU, this is a chance to defend its home turf, validate its unbeaten start, and show the country that the Cougars belong in the national championship conversation.
The PredictionExpect a physical, intense game with both teams trying to control the line of scrimmage. Notre Dame's defensive depth and explosive running game give the Irish a strong foundation, while Bachmeier's dual-threat ability and BYU's home crowd make the Cougars a dangerous opponent.
Evan J. Thomas Prediction: Notre Dame 41, BYU 17.
I expect the Irish defense to make enough key stops, Carr to deliver in the biggest moments, and Notre Dame's running game to help take control in the second half. BYU will make the Irish work for it, but Notre Dame finds a way to leave Provo undefeated.
☘️ Final thought: This is the kind of game that separates a team with a great record from a team capable of making a championship run. The Irish have earned the No. 2 ranking. Now comes the opportunity to prove it on the road.

NO. 3 NOTRE DAME VS. STANFORD: IRISH LOOK TO STAY PERFECT IN SOUTH BEND

10/9/2026

The Fighting Irish are back home, and the mission is simple: keep winning, protect the ranking, and build momentum before a massive showdown with BYU. No. 3 Notre Dame welcomes the Stanford Cardinal to Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday, October 10, looking to improve to 6-0 and extend its winning streak to 16 games.

But while the Irish enter as heavy favorites, this matchup comes with a reminder that no opponent can be overlooked.

Just ask Notre Dame fans who remember Stanford's stunning 16-14 upset in South Bend in 2022.

THE IRISH: 5-0 AND HUNGRY FOR MORE
Notre Dame enters the weekend riding high after a hard-fought 37-26 road victory over North Carolina. The Irish showed resilience in Chapel Hill, overcoming adversity and leaning on their rushing attack to close out the Tar Heels.

Quarterback CJ Carr continues to lead an offense that has demonstrated the ability to attack through the air and on the ground. Carr enters this matchup with 1,197 passing yards, 13 touchdown passes and just one interception. Running back Aneyas Williams has contributed 266 rushing yards and four touchdowns, while receiver Jordan Faison has emerged as a reliable weapon with 25 catches for 371 yards and four scores.

The next step is consistency.

Notre Dame needs to establish the run early, protect Carr, limit turnovers and avoid the stretches of uneven execution that allowed North Carolina to remain competitive.

With a challenging stretch of games ahead, Saturday offers the Irish an opportunity to sharpen their execution before the stakes rise.

STANFORD: A TEAM SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS
Stanford arrives in South Bend with a 2-3 record and coming off a brutal 57-3 loss to Wake Forest. First-year head coach Tavita Pritchard faces the challenge of getting his team to regroup against one of the nation's top-ranked programs.

Quarterback Davis Warren has thrown for 1,207 yards and five touchdowns this season. Stanford has shown the ability to generate explosive passing plays, but its offense has struggled to find consistency, particularly when forced to play from behind.

The Cardinal's best chance to make this competitive is to protect the football, hit a few explosive plays and keep Notre Dame's offense on the sideline.

If Stanford falls behind early, the pressure will increase on Warren and an offense that has struggled to establish a dependable rushing attack.

THREE KEYS TO VICTORY FOR NOTRE DAME
1. Establish the running game.
Notre Dame needs to continue building momentum on the ground. A productive rushing attack would take pressure off Carr, control the clock and create opportunities for explosive plays through the air.

2. Make Stanford one dimensional.
The Irish defense has been one of the team's biggest strengths this season. Getting pressure on Warren, limiting his downfield opportunities and forcing Stanford into obvious passing situations could make for a long afternoon for the Cardinal.

3. Stay focused with BYU looming.
This is arguably the biggest challenge for Notre Dame: treating Stanford like the most important game on the schedule. The Irish cannot afford to look ahead to next week's trip to Provo. A fast start and disciplined performance would help eliminate any chance of an upset.

THE MATCHUP TO WATCH
Notre Dame's defensive front versus Stanford's offense.
The Irish defense will be looking to respond after allowing a season-high 26 points against North Carolina. Stanford, meanwhile, enters after scoring just three points in its previous game.
Notre Dame has an opportunity to control the line of scrimmage, disrupt Stanford's timing and force the Cardinal into uncomfortable situations.

If the Irish defense sets the tone early, Stanford could struggle to keep pace.

GAME DAY DETAILS
🏈 Matchup: Stanford Cardinal at No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish
📅 Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026
🕒 Kickoff: 3:30 p.m. ET
📍 Location: Notre Dame Stadium — South Bend, Indiana
📺 TV: NBC and Peacock
🏆 Trophy: Legends Trophy

EVAN'S PREDICTION: NOTRE DAME 48, STANFORD 10 Stanford's ability to create turnovers and occasionally hit explosive passes means Notre Dame still needs to play disciplined football. However, the Irish have significant advantages on both sides of the ball.

Expect Carr and the offense to find their rhythm, the running game to keep moving forward, and the defense to make life difficult for Warren.

The Irish should control this one from the opening quarter and head into their BYU showdown undefeated.

FINAL WORD
Notre Dame has championship aspirations, and those aspirations demand more than simply winning. They demand focus, discipline, physicality and the ability to handle business against every opponent. Saturday is another opportunity for the Irish to demonstrate that they're capable of doing exactly that.

16 STRAIGHT WINS IS THE GOAL. KEEP THE FOOT ON THE GAS. GO IRISH! ☘️🏈🔥

No. 3 Notre Dame survived a tough, rain-soaked battle in Chapel Hill on Saturday, defeating North Carolina 37-26 to improve to 5-0 and extend its winning streak to 15 games.

The Irish jumped out to a 21-7 lead, but UNC fought back to within 21-20 early in the third quarter after a 98-yard kickoff return. Notre Dame responded by taking control with a physical rushing attack and long, clock-eating drives.

CJ Carr accounted for five touchdowns, throwing for 234 yards and four scores while Jonaz Walton exploded for a career-high 120 rushing yards. Jordan Faison was Carr's favorite target, hauling in eight passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

The Irish finished with 475 total yards, including 241 on the ground, and controlled the ball for more than 37 minutes. The defense also came up with two interceptions to help Notre Dame pull away down the stretch.

It wasn't always pretty, but it was another gritty road win for a Notre Dame team that continues to find ways to win.

5-0. 15 STRAIGHT. AND THE IRISH KEEP ROLLING. ☘️

NOTRE DAME’S DEFENSE ISN’T JUST GOOD... THE IRISH ARE BUILDING SOMETHING SPECIAL

10/1/2026

Four games into the 2026 season, Notre Dame’s defense has gone from promising unit to legitimate national force.

There was plenty of attention on C.J. Carr and the Notre Dame offense entering the 2026 season.
And for good reason. But four games into the season, it may be the defense that has quietly become the biggest reason to believe this Notre Dame team belongs in the national championship conversation.  The numbers are getting difficult to ignore.

After Notre Dame's 49-10 demolition of Purdue, the Irish are sitting at 4-0 and ranked No. 3 nationally. More importantly, Notre Dame is allowing just 199.3 yards per game, the best mark in the FBS, while giving up only 8.3 points per game, which ranks second nationally.

That's not simply a good defense.
That's an elite defense.

THE DEFENSE IS SETTING THE TONE
The most impressive part of Notre Dame's defensive performance might be how consistently the unit has controlled games.

Against Rice, the Irish pitched a 52-0 shutout.
Against Michigan State, Notre Dame surrendered just 10 points.
Then came Purdue.  The Boilermakers managed only 90 total yards in the first half, including just 12 rushing yards, as Notre Dame raced to a 35-0 halftime advantage. The Irish pass rush consistently disrupted Purdue's offense and never allowed the game to become competitive.

And there's another number that deserves attention:
Notre Dame has allowed only one second-half touchdown all season. That touchdown came with just six seconds remaining against Purdue. That's an extraordinary level of consistency.

PRESSURE, SPEED AND DEPTH
The Irish aren't simply sitting back and waiting for opponents to make mistakes.
They're attacking. Defensive coordinator Chris Ash has utilized creative pressure packages designed specifically around opposing protections, giving Notre Dame multiple ways to create disruption. Notre Dame entered the Purdue game ranked among the national leaders in several defensive categories, including total defense and yards per play.

The front has been particularly disruptive.
Boubacar Traore has emerged as one of the leaders of that group, while Notre Dame continues to find contributions from across the defensive depth chart. That's important because great defenses aren't built around 11 players. They're built around having enough players to keep the pressure coming for four quarters. And Notre Dame has shown exactly that.

THE TURNOVERS ARE COMING, TOO
Another encouraging piece of the equation is Notre Dame's ability to create takeaways.
Through four games, the Irish have intercepted opponents three times while recovering multiple fumbles, and the defense itself has already contributed three touchdowns. That matters because a defense capable of getting off the field and creating points can completely change the complexion of a game. Notre Dame doesn't necessarily need to win shootouts when its defense is capable of putting an opponent in a hole before the offense even gets comfortable.

THE BIG QUESTION: WHO HAVE THEY PLAYED?
There is one legitimate caveat.
Notre Dame's first four opponents have been Wisconsin, Rice, Michigan State and Purdue.
That's a schedule that has provided opportunities for the defense to dominate, but the Irish haven't yet faced the kind of elite offensive opponent that can truly stress every level of the unit.

That's why the upcoming stretch matters. The next test comes Saturday against North Carolina, which presents a different challenge and gives Notre Dame another opportunity to prove that these numbers aren't simply the product of favorable matchups. And that's ultimately what Notre Dame needs.  More evidence.

A DEFENSE BUILT FOR A LONG SEASON
The most encouraging thing isn't necessarily where the defense ranks today.
It's how the group is playing.
They're communicating.
They're playing fast.
They're creating pressure.
They're tackling.
They're generating turnovers.

And perhaps most importantly, they're allowing Notre Dame to dictate the terms of games.
Marcus Freeman has repeatedly emphasized execution and eliminating self-inflicted mistakes as foundational principles for the defense. Four games into the season, that philosophy is showing up on Saturdays.

That's the kind of identity championship-caliber teams need. Because eventually, Notre Dame is going to face a game where the offense isn't clicking.

Maybe Carr has an off night. Maybe the running game gets bottled up. Maybe the Irish find themselves in a fourth-quarter battle. That's when a defense like this becomes invaluable.

THE IRISH DON'T NEED TO BE PERFECT
And that's perhaps the most exciting part. Notre Dame doesn't need its defense to be perfect. It needs the defense to continue being this good. If the Irish offense continues developing around Carr, while the defense maintains its current level of pressure, discipline and physicality, Notre Dame has something every championship contender needs:

A unit capable of keeping them in virtually any game.
Four games in, the defense has already established itself as one of the nation's statistical leaders.
Now comes the harder part.
Proving it against increasingly difficult competition.
But the early returns are undeniable.
The 2026 Notre Dame defense isn't waiting for the offense to carry it.
It's becoming the foundation of the entire team.
And if this group continues to rise as the schedule gets tougher, the Irish may have found the exact kind of defense that can carry a team deep into December.

The offense gets the headlines.
The defense may be building the championship foundation.
☘️ GO IRISH.
